Background of the Study
Health crises, such as epidemics and widespread disease outbreaks, can have far‐reaching economic consequences, particularly for small businesses. In Nigeria, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the economy, yet they are highly vulnerable to disruptions caused by health emergencies. During health crises, increased absenteeism, reduced consumer spending, and supply chain interruptions can severely impact small business performance (Chinwe, 2023). These crises often lead to unexpected declines in revenue and increased operational costs, placing a strain on businesses that typically operate with limited financial buffers.

The economic shock of a health crisis extends beyond immediate losses. Reduced productivity and the diversion of funds toward emergency healthcare responses can diminish the long-term growth prospects of small businesses. In Nigeria, where many SMEs lack access to formal credit and insurance, the economic fallout from health crises is particularly severe. Government interventions, such as emergency relief funds and subsidized healthcare services, have been introduced to mitigate these effects, but their impact remains uneven across sectors and regions (Okoro, 2024).

Understanding how health crises affect small business performance is crucial for designing targeted support measures and enhancing overall economic resilience. This study investigates the relationship between health emergencies and small business performance by analyzing indicators such as revenue changes, operational disruptions, and recovery times. By identifying the primary challenges faced by SMEs during health crises, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and business leaders to strengthen the economic resilience of the small business sector (Chinwe, 2023; Okoro, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Despite various interventions aimed at mitigating the impact of health crises, small businesses in Nigeria continue to suffer significant economic losses during such events. A major problem is that health emergencies lead to severe disruptions in daily operations, resulting in reduced revenues and prolonged recovery periods for SMEs (Chinwe, 2023). Limited access to emergency funding and insurance further exacerbates the vulnerability of these businesses, forcing many to operate under constrained financial conditions.

Additionally, the lack of effective contingency planning and crisis management among small businesses contributes to prolonged downturns in performance. Many SMEs are ill-equipped to manage the financial shocks associated with health crises, which often leads to closures or reduced output. The cumulative effect of these challenges is a weakened small business sector that struggles to contribute effectively to national economic growth. This study seeks to address these issues by examining how health crises impact small business performance and identifying strategies to enhance resilience and recovery (Okoro, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the impact of health crises on the financial performance of small businesses in Nigeria.

  • To identify key challenges faced by SMEs during health emergencies.

  • To propose strategies that can improve crisis management and resilience among small businesses.

Research Questions

  • How do health crises affect the revenue and operational performance of SMEs in Nigeria?

  • What are the primary challenges that hinder small business recovery during health emergencies?

  • What measures can enhance the resilience of small businesses against health crises?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Health crises significantly reduce small business revenue and performance.

  • H₂: Limited access to emergency funding exacerbates the negative impact of health crises on SMEs.

  • H₃: Effective crisis management strategies improve small business resilience during health emergencies.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the impact of health crises on small business performance in Nigeria from 2020 to 2025, using surveys and financial data from SMEs in diverse sectors. Limitations include difficulties in isolating crisis effects from other market factors and data collection challenges.

Definitions of Terms

  • Health Crises: Events characterized by sudden increases in disease prevalence that disrupt normal economic activities.

  • Small Business Performance: The financial and operational outcomes of small and medium-sized enterprises.
